WHO worked with health-care facilities in several countries to test a multimodal hand hygiene improvement approach. This approach includes steps such as system changes, education, awareness-raising, monitoring and leadership support. In 2007, the National Children´s Hospital “Dr. Carlos Sáenz Herrera”(HNN) in Costa Rica started working with WHO on a pilot to reduce HAI.

The programme continues today and the Infection and Prevention and Control Unit has trained another 29 public hospitals in the country, as well as 8 in other Latin American countries.
