Costa Rica: cleaning hands stops the spread of drug-resistant germs

Once the WHO approach was put into practice, the hand hygiene compliance rates at the Children’s Hospital increased from 40 to 70%, with HAI falling from 7% to 4%. This resulted in fewer infections and deaths.

As a result, the Costa Rican Health Care Centres also followed the WHO recommendations and the multimodal improvement approach to address their HAI.
