10 facts about deafness
February 2013
CBM/P. Van Hasselt
Deafness refers to the complete loss of hearing in one or both ears. Hearing loss refers to both complete and partial loss of the ability to hear. The majority of people with moderate-to-profound hearing loss live in low- and middle-income countries.
50% of the factors which lead to hearing loss can be prevented. A large number of those affected by hearing loss can be benefitted through medicines, surgery and use of hearing devices. Raising awareness and improving access to services at the primary level can help to reduce the prevalence and adverse impact of hearing loss.
