WHO established the International Commission for the Certification of Dracunculiasis Eradication in 1995 to certify the elimination of guinea-worm disease. To date the commission has certified 187 countries and territories as free of the disease. Only four African countries, namely Chad, Ethiopia, Mali and South Sudan remain endemic in 2016.
