WHO established the International Commission for the Certification of Dracunculiasis Eradication in 1995 to certify the elimination of guinea-worm disease. To date the commission has certified 187 countries and territories as free of guinea-worm disease. Only four African countries, namely Chad, Ethiopia, Mali and South Sudan, are still reporting cases, with the majority of cases occuring in South Sudan.
