Vaccination against vaccine-preventable diseases is essential to reaching the Millennium Development Goal 4 on reducing under-five mortality by two thirds by 2015.

Immunization is also a key strategy to ensure global health security and for responding to the threat of emerging infections such as pandemic influenza.

WHO's work in this area includes setting standards, strengthening immunization system, regulating vaccine quality and supply, finance, and research and development. The activities are in line with the goals set out in the Global Immunization Vision and Strategy. The strategy - developed jointly with UNICEF - provides several strategies from which countries can choose for implementation according to their specific needs.
