MPOWER policy 1: monitoring tobacco use and prevention

In 2004, about 5 million adults aged 30 years and over died from direct tobacco use (smoking and smokeless) around the globe. That is one death approximately every six seconds. Assessment of tobacco use and its impact must be strengthened. Currently, only fifty-nine countries, representing under half of the world’s population, monitor tobacco use by repeating nationally representative youth and adult surveys at least once every five years.
