A month after the tsunami: Sri Lanka begins to rebuild

Sri Lanka was one of the countries worst affected by the tsunami on 26 December 2004. At least one million people were directly affected, with more than 30 000 people killed and thousands more missing. Along the northern, southern and eastern coastlines, the giant waves left a trail of destruction up to two kilometers inland in some places.

Despite extensive damage to the country, the situation has been improving. Sri Lanka is increasingly moving from an acute emergency phase to one of relief and reconstruction. This photo essay documents the health situation in the affected areas one month after the tsunami.
