Dr Samuel Kariuki
Chief Research Officer and Head of Department, Centre for Microbiology Research at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI)
Dr Kariuki coordinates the Medical Microbiology MSc/PhD course at the KEMRI graduate school, and is a honorary lecturer, Department of Medical Microbiology, University of Liverpool, and Associate Scientist, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cambridge, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. He holds several professional advisory positions including as Board Member, Association for Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA) and Interim Chair for the Kenya Chapter and as Ambassador, American Society for Microbiology, East African Region. He is a reviewer for several Microbiology-related journals. Dr Kariuki graduated in DVM and holds an MSc in Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Nairobi, and a PhD (Tropical Medicine) from the University of Liverpool. Main research interests are in epidemiology and genetics of invasive Salmonella infections and other enteric pathogens, surveillance, monitoring and genetic basis for antimicrobial resistance in enteric pathogens.
