Richard Reid-Smith

Dr Richard Reid-Smith is a veterinary epidemiologist with the Laboratory for Foodborne Zoonoses (LFZ), Public Health Agency of Canada and Adjunct Professor at the Depts. of Population Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Guelph. Dr Reid-Smith holds a BSc degree in Zoology from the University of Western Ontario, and a DVM and a DVSc (Clinical Epidemiology) from the University of Guelph. Dr Reid-Smith spent 15 years full-and part-time in small animal veterinary practice in Toronto, and one year as an assistant professor at the University of Guelph. Dr Reid-Smith joined the LFZ in 2000. Dr Reid-Smith is the Research and Antimicrobial Use Monitoring Coordinator for the Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Unit of LFZ, and has been extensively involved in the development and operation of the Canadian Integrated Program for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance (CIPARS). Dr Reid-Smith research interests include antimicrobial use and resistance in farm environments; antimicrobial resistance in the food-chain; antimicrobial use practices of veterinarians; antimicrobial resistance in companion animals, horses, wildlife and the environment; and the comparative molecular epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance.
