Dr Haruo Watanabe is currently Deputy-Director General in National Institute of Infectious Diseases and Professor, Faculty of Medicine, Tokyo University, Japan. Dr Watanabe's research interest areas are understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of enteric bacteria including EHEC, Salmonella and Shigella, and development and application of molecular epidemiological methods for outbreak investigations. Dr Watanabe holds MD and PhD degrees from Gunma University in Microbiology.
