Opisthorchiasis felinea
Recommendations for community diagnosis
There is insufficient information on the epidemiological pattern of opisthorchiasis felinea to generate adequate recommendations for public health control. As an interim measure, WHO recommends following the same guidelines as those for opisthorchiasis viverrini and clonorchiasis: community diagnosis carried out at the district level, and preventive chemotherapy implemented using single administrations of praziquantel at 40 mg/kg, as indicated by the following table:
| District | Prevalence of infection in the sample populationa | Action to be taken | |
| Type of intervention and target population | Interval of re-treatment | ||
| High risk | ≥20 | Universal treatment (MDA) • Treat all individuals in the district | 12 months |
| Low risk | <20 | Option 1: universal treatment (MDA) • Treat all individuals in the district | 24 months |
| Option 2: targeted treatment • Treat all individuals in the district who report habitually eating raw fish | 12 months | ||
