Background

FAO and WHO convened a Joint Expert Consultation on the Safety Assessment of Foods Derived from Genetically Modified Animals including Fish. The main purpose of this Expert Consultation was to review and analyse data on the current situation of GM animals, in particular fish, and the foods derived therefrom. Discussion focused on food safety assessment of GM fish, including their toxicological and nutritional evaluation and the application of the concept of substantial equivalence. It also addressed specific food safety issues originating from GM fish.
