Member States attending the 34th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission supported the proposals put forward by the Codex Trust Fund in response to the recommendations of the Mid-term Review aimed at making further progress on achieving the three objectives of the Codex Trust Fund:
- Widening participation in Codex
- Strengthening participation in Codex
- Enhancing technical and scientific input to Codex
The Commission agreed with the proposals of the Codex Trust Fund to provide additional support to Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) as well as countries who have graduated from the Trust Fund but are not sustaining a sufficient level of participation in Codex.
Members of the Commission supported proposed actions aimed at enhancing participation through building the capacity of countries to participate effectively in Codex. These activities will be carried out jointly by FAO and WHO with financial support from the Trust Fund.
The mechanism proposed to achieve Objective 3 was endorsed, with emphasis on generating scientific data in developing countries that is important for the development of Codex standards.
