Fourth formal meeting of the Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG) in Geneva, 8-12 November 2010

The fourth formal meeting of the FERG took place in Geneva from 8 to 12 November 2010 with the main purposes of (a) providing the opportunity for members to meet and discuss the progress made over the last 12 months and (b) reviewing and revising the work commissioned according to the FERG Task Forces' workplans. Interim results on the following areas of foodborne diseases were presented and appraised:

  • Chemicals/toxins: Aflatoxins, Cadmium, Cassava Cyanide, Dioxins, Organophosphates, Lead
  • Parasites: Alveolar Eccinococcus (or Fox Tapeworm), Anisakiasis, Foodborne Trematodes, Intestinal protozoa, Taenia Solium (or Pork Tapeworm), Toxoplasmosis, Trichinellosis
  • Enteric pathogens: Diarrhoeal diseases, Brucellosis, Hepatitis A, M. Bovis, Norovirus

The FERG also appraised protocols developed for use in the forthcoming pilot country studies, both in the areas of burden of disease and policy context analysis. The pilots are set to begin in early 2011.

On 11 November 2010, the annual FERG Stakeholder Meeting was held. The FERG stakeholder meetings are attended by WHO Member States, bi- and multilateral donors, foundations, consumer groups, NGOs, academia, scientific and public media as well as agricultural and food industry and have each time shown how important dialogue, exchange and collaboration are with our stakeholder community.
