54th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women
Place: United Nations, New York, United States
Date: 1-12 March 2010
The 54th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW54) is of strategic importance to WHO. It is, for instance, an opportunity to mobilize support for the development of a shared agenda for women's health, as called for by the recently released WHO report "Women and health: today's evidence tomorrow's agenda".
CSW will undertake a review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action 15 years after its adoption ("Beijing +15"). The Platform for Action highlights the importance of gender equality, development and peace, outlines 12 critical areas of concern and recommends actions and targets for governments and other partners.
The health of women figures prominently among the critical areas of concern, including an entire chapter on women's health as well as several determinants of women's health reflected in other chapters such as violence against women, education, women's equal participation in decision-making and the need for sound data on gender and women to inform policies and programmes towards achieving the Platform objectives.
Hence, at CSW54 a number of events are planned to take place in New York, between 1 and 12 March 2010 (see the link below).
