Nongovernmental organizations in official relations with WHO

WHO works with a robust network of organizations and professionals to advance the field of gender equality and health equity. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in official relations with WHO in the area of gender, women and health include:

  • International Council of Women
The International Council of Women is an umbrella organization of national councils of women’s nongovernmental organizations from all parts of the world. Its mission is to unite them for action to improve the status of women and the well-being of society. The Council was founded in 1888.
  • International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW International)
The International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW International) is a network of business and professional women from over ninety countries across five continents, working for global gender equality in power and decision-making through its advocacy and UN participation. The federation develops the professional, leadership and business potential of women through advocacy, mentoring, networking, skill building and economic empowerment programmes and projects around the world. It has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
  • International Alliance of Women: Equal Rights-Equal Responsibilities
The International Alliance of Women (IAW) has been active for over a century as an international nongovernmental and umbrella organization of women’s associations. It aims to proactively promote and advocate the establishment – in law and practice – of equality between women and men at all levels. IAW holds that full and equal enjoyment of human rights as laid down in conventions and declarations such as the CEDAW and the Beijing Platform for Action is due to all women and girls. The Alliance works at global, regional and national levels and lobbies through representatives in international organizations and delegations at multilateral meetings.
  • Medical Women's International Association
The Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) is an international nongovernmental organization representing women doctors from all five continents. The association was founded in 1919, at a time when women doctors were a curiosity and there was a need for a forum to discuss common concerns. MWIA is therefore one of the oldest professional bodies at the international level. It is non-political, non-sectarian and non-profit making.

In line with WHO regulations, a triennial work plan is agreed between WHO and these NGOs.
