Regional International Women's Day 2009 activities
WHO Regional Office for the Americas (AMRO)
AMRO will be commemorating the International Women'd Day 2009 with the theme "Gender and culture matter - health for all!" on March 11 with PAHO colleagues, OAS Ambassadors, and partners of other UN, development and civil society Organizations, as well as delegates from the health sector of Member States. During the event the winners of its annual best practice competition on gender and ethnicity mainstreaming in health will present their project, and awarded by Dr Roses. The prize includes funds for development of the winners' experiences with gender rand ethnicity mainstreaming in health into a best practice case study.
WHO Regional Office for Europe (EURO)
The Russian Academy of State Management under the President’s Office and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Russian Federation will arrange an International conference on "Effectiveness of the state management in the modern environment". Gender is an integral part of the agenda - specifically with respect to achieving the MDGs.
WHO Regional Office for Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO)
Egypt: The Donor Gender and Development group is sponsoring a seminar with the theme Gender and Education; the event will be held in conjunction with the Donor Education sub-group. WHO country office will participate in the event.
Iraq: Seminar will be held in the Ministry of Health, Baghdad discussing women, health and gender.
Jordan: The UN Heads of Mission in Jordan and the Jordanian National Commission for Women under the Patronage of HRH Princess Basma Bint Talal are organizing a seminar that will include testimonials from Jordanian women.
Pakistan: Seminar by women Parliamentarians (Friends of Alliance), Government Departments, civil society organizations, donors and UN agencies, including WHO that will identify priorities for draft National Plan of Action on Violence against Women and engage women parliamentarians in EVAW initiatives as Friends of EVAW Alliance.
Yemen: National Women's Committee and the UN gender group, including WHO, are organizing a 2 day conference commemorating the International Women's Dday 2009.

WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia (SEARO)
SEARO For this year's International Women's Day (IWD), SEARO will publish on the website materials around the United Nations theme "Women and men united to end violence against women and girls", including a message from the Regional Director. A special token of IWD celebration will be distributed to all SEARO staff.
WHO Regional Office for Western Pacific (WPRO)
WPRO celebrated International Women's Day on Thursday March 5th by inviting Senator Loren Legarda, the Philippine Senate Chair of the Committee on Health and Demography, to address WPRO staff - including senior officials, 25 staff from WPRO country offices and CLOs. Senator Legarda spoke on the topic of eliminating violence against women. A brownbag lunchtime gathering of staff on Thursday, the 5th of March, from 11:30 am to 13:00 pm was held in addition to a panel discussion on violence against women and girls by Dr Massimo Ghidinelli, Regional Adviser, HIV/AIDS and STI; Dr Narimah Awin, Regional Adviser, Making Pregnancy Safer, and Dr Govind Salik Ram, Public Health Specialist, from WHO Office in Mongolia.
