Topics: Genetics testing and screening
Since July 2000, antenatal thalassaemia screening has been offered to all pregnant women at every public hospital and Maternal and Child Health Centre in Hong Kong. This document provides guidelines for screening the local population of Hong Kong (mostly of southern Chinese ethnicity) for thalassaemia. A technical introduction to the molecular basis and prevalence of thalassaemia is provided, followed by discussions of timing of screening and the need for education and counselling of patients in order to obtain informed consent.
