Global Foodborne Infections Network (GFN)

Advanced Training

The advanced training courses and workshops build on the knowledge gained from the microbiology, epidemiology and joint modules. Their format is guided by needs identified by WHO Regional and Country Offices and feedback provided by previous course participants.

  • Regional projects/surveillance enhancement
Projects are developed based on needs at the regional or country level. These initiatives are supported by the Global Foodborne Infections Network through reference services, regular follow-up, hosting visiting scientists at steering committee institutes, site visits and ad hoc training.
  • Conference-style workshops
This module offers participants an opportunity to present the implementation of knowledge learned from previous the Global Foodborne Infections Network courses through oral and poster presentations by participants. These sessions offer significant opportunities for discussion on these initiatives with peers and facilitators. Projects implemented are generally country workplans developed in or inspired by previous GFN training modules.
  • Training in advanced methods
The training in advanced methods module introduces participants to networks such as the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) and the Global Early Warning System for Major Animal Diseases, including Zoonoses (GLEWS), as well as international standard setting bodies such as the Codex Alimentarius, and offers opportunities to liaise with networks such as PulseNet International. This module includes lectures, bench-top training, computer-based epidemiologic training (i.e. case studies, use of epidemiological software), demonstrations, case studies, group discussions and training in advanced laboratory and epidemiology methods, such as pulsed field gel electrophoresis, burden of disease, source attribution and risk assessment.
