Abstainers, past 12 months

Situation and trends

In creating an accurate picture of the impact of global alcohol consumption on health, abstention is an important indicator. There are different types of abstainers – lifetime abstainers (those adults who have never consumed alcohol), former drinkers (adults who have previously consumed alcohol, but who have not done so in the previous 12-month period), and past year abstainers (adults who have not had any alcoholic drink in the past 12 months). Globally, 48% of the world's population have never consumed alcohol. Also, 14% of the population have consumed alcohol earlier in life, but not during the past year. In fact, two thirds of all women worldwide have abstained from drinking alcohol in the past 12 months and almost half of all men.
