Highlight on 2009 epidemiological season
During the 2009 meningitis season, 7 of the 14 African countries under enhanced surveillance faced outbreaks of meningitis. 217 districts from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Niger and Nigeria crossed the meningitis epidemic threshold. Nigeria faced the vast majority of these outbreaks, which affected 175 districts. Niger was also seriously affected, with 25 of its 42 districts crossing the epidemic threshold.
