Number of women living with HIV
Situation and trends
The proportion of women living with HIV has remained stable, at 51% of the global total. About 17.4 million adults living with HIV are women. Women comprised 59% of the adults living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa in 2014, as they have for most of the past decade.
The HIV response for women has also contributed to achieve the MDG 5 – the reduction of maternal mortality- because 60% of treatment in 2014 was provided to women, reducing the largest cause of mortality among women of child bearing age in Africa.
