Exposure to second-hand smoke
Situation and trends
World-wide, 40% of children, 33% of male non-smokers, and 35% of female non-smokers are regularly exposed to second-hand smoke indoors. Exposure varies widely, ranging from 13% in Africa to 50% or more in western Pacific or eastern Europe. These changes can be mostly explained by the stages of the tobacco epidemic of a country because second-hand smoke is closely related to active smoking rates where no smoke-free policies have been implemented.
