Implementation of screening and brief interventions for substance use and substance use disorders in primary health care

Situation

Screening and brief interventions for substance use and substance use disorders in primary health care can be an efficient way to reduce harmful substance use, and refer patients in need of treatment to specialized treatment services. In 2008, 9% of countries reported routine implementation of screening and brief interventions for alcohol use and alcohol use disorders in primary health care, and around 6% of countries for drug use and drug use disorders accordingly.
