The co-epidemics of TB and HIV
Situation in 2013
The first key intervention for reducing the burden of HIV-associated TB is HIV testing for TB patients. In 2013, 48% of TB patients globally had a documented HIV test result. In the African region that has the highest TB/HIV burden, three out of four TB patients knew their HIV status.
The most important intervention to reduce mortality among HIV-positive TB patients is antiretroviral therapy (ART). In 2013, 70% of the TB patients known to be living with HIV were started on ART. This level, however, falls short of the 100% target set for 2015.
