Knowledge of transmission of HIV/AIDS
Women face particular vulnerability to HIV infection, stemming from a combination of biological factors and gender inequality. Female drug users and sex workers are particularly at risk; stigma, discrimination, and punitive policies only increase their vulnerability.
Knowledge of sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS has increased for women in both richest 20% and poorest 20% urban populations in Asia, Africa and Americas. Although the percentage of women with accurate knowledge on transmission of HIV/AIDS has doubled in Asia among the urban poorest 20% nearly a half are still not sufficiently aware of the issue.
