UNFCCC Panama climate change talks

The third part of the sixteenth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol will take place in Panama City with Parties continuing to engage in the policy discussion in the contact group and in the work on the more specific issues in the spin-off groups. WHO representatives will accompany the negotiations, meeting with the "Friends of Public Health" contact group of negotiators, the UNFCCC Secretariat, and the representatives of the UN High Level Committee on Programmes, to provide health input into the climate policy discussions.

    WHO welcomes the opportunity to submit its considerations on loss and damage within the health sector as a consequence of the adverse effect of climate change and to express its views on the following three broad thematic areas: i. Assessing the risk of loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change and current knowledge on the same; ii. A range of approaches to address loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change, including impacts related to extreme weather events and slow-onset events, taking into consideration experience at all levels; iii. The role of the Convention in enhancing the implementation of approaches to address loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change.
