Canada Health Infoway, an independent not-for-profit organization funded by the Canadian government, published this pan-national plan in 2006. It emphasizes five priority programmatic areas including: implementing a comprehensive electronic health record and public health surveillance system, and an electronic medical records system for physicians and specialists; improving access for patients to their own health information; and enhancing management and transparency into patient wait times for care. An updated draft is scheduled for release in the autumn of 2012.

Significant progress has been made in advancing the availability and use of electronic health information solutions. Canadians and their providers are reaping the benefits of having electronic access to critical health information that enables faster and more effective care decisions.
