Hand Hygiene Moment 1 - Global Observation Survey

WHO SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands invites health-care facilities to participate in a global survey by observing hand hygiene compliance with Moment 1 (before touching a patient) and submitting their data to WHO.

Why?

  • To motivate health-care workers to focus on taking action to improve and sustain hand hygiene, including the important indication for hand hygiene "before touching a patient";
  • To assess health-care worker compliance with Moment 1 (before touching a patient);
  • For WHO, to assess global compliance with Moment 1 through secured data collection and analysis.

How?

  • Download a) the new Hand Hygiene Moment 1 Observation Form and b) the Hand Hygiene Moment 1 - Global Observation Survey Instructions below;
  • Plan the survey (observations) in your facility (facility-wide or in some specific areas/departments); assess the resources available, decide the scope, and draw up a plan;
  • Conduct the survey until 13 June 2010;
  • You can analyze your data locally or submit the observed data to WHO until 13 June 2010. Submitting your observation data online will allow you to immediately view the results and WHO to assess global compliance with Moment 1 of the "Five moments for hand hygiene".

Important: the data will be accessible only by the data manager designated at your health-care facility and by the WHO team dedicated to the Global Survey. Data will be confidentially managed by WHO and, if disseminated, displayed by country without mentioning the facility name.

Period for observation at your facility and data submission to WHO: now extended until 13 June 2010.

Important information for online data submission to WHO

  • In order to submit the observation data to WHO online the health-care facility must be registered with WHO SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands.
  • The procedure for online data submission is not accessible from this web site but it will be enabled only following an email invitation sent by WHO to the main contact person of facilities registered for WHO SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands. This email will include instructions for registration and data submission.
  • After the receipt of the email invitation by the main contact person, the procedure for online data submission involves 5 steps which must be carefully followed for a successful submission:

STEP 1: The main contact person has to designate or identify a Data Manager at the health-care facility and forward him or her the email invitation with the instructions

STEP 2: The Data Manager has to register the health-care facility for data submission by using the username and password provided by WHO in the email invitation. Once the registration is submitted, the Data Manager will get an email with further instructions for STEPS 3-5

STEP 3:The Data Manager has to create an account at WHO Application Directory Service

STEP 4:The Data Manager has to confirm the creation of the WHO Application Directory Service account

STEP 5: The Data Manager will enter the observation data online (this will be possible only starting from 3 May).

For help, please consult the FAQ or send an email to handhygieneobs@who.int (allow for 3 working days turn around time).

We count on your participation in monitoring and improving hand hygiene!
