Meeting on the Affirmation of Egypt's Commitment to the first Global Patient Safety Challenge

The first Global Patient Safety Challenge "Clean Care is Safer Care" was launched in Egypt on May 6, 2008, as part of a regional technical meeting on the WHO Guidelines and implementation strategy on hand hygiene. The Minister of Health, H.E. Professor Hatem El Gabaly, affirmed Egypt's commitment to leading improvements in the prevention of health care-associated infection by signing a statement. Professor Didier Pittet, leader of the first Global Patient Safety Challenge participated at the event and delivered a speech on the global impact of health care-associated infection and "Clean Care is Safer Care".

The regional technical meeting which followed the launch event, aimed to inform and participants of the impact of health care-associated infection (HAI) and to develop regional plans for reducing HAI in the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO) through better hand hygiene and other improvements in infection control practices, clinical procedures, surveillance and advocacy. Participants included experts on infection prevention and control and policy makers from 19 EMR countries.

Participants of the workshop examined and provided feedback on a set of WHO recommendations on hand hygiene issued as part of the WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care and debated the adaptation of the guidelines and its multimodal implementation strategy to the needs of health care facilities in EMR countries.
