Clean Care is Safer Care

Ministerial Signing Ceremony
"Clean Care is Safer Care"

Yaoundé, Cameroon - 3 September 2008

The first Global Patient Safety Challenge, "Clean Care is Safer Care" is a flagship programme of WHO Patient Safety. It stimulates global commitment and action to reduce health care-associated infections (HAI) worldwide. This Challenge has contributed to mobilizing countries, organizations and individuals to launch intensified action to make health care safer, and more particularly to achieve cleaner and safer care.

At country level, ministries of health have been encouraged to make a formal political commitment to tackle HAI by signing a statement of commitment/pledge outlining their intention to take action to address the problem of HAI.

A special ministerial signing ceremony was held in Yaoundé on 3 September 2008, during the 58th Session of the Regional Committee for Africa. During this event, African countries were given the opportunity to sign the "Clean Care is Safer Care" pledge to make safer health care a reality for their population. Over 30 countries took this opportunity to sign the pledge.
