Clean Care is Safer Care

WHO First Global Patient Safety Challenge Train the Trainers' Workshop - SEARO

26 August 2009
Geneva, Switzerland

A one-day training workshop was held in Geneva on 26 August with the participation of country representatives from India, Mongolia, Thailand and the Maldives together with one core group member and two guest participants from Australia.

The workshop focused on WHO Multimodal Hand Hygiene Improvement Strategy and provided an opportunity to share and convey technical information and tools on hand hygiene.

In-depth discussions took place around the WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care and its supporting implementation toolkit. Aspects such as the role of hand transmission in health care-associated infection, the Five-Step approach to improving hand hygiene compliance, the "My five Moments for Hand Hygiene" approach and the method for undertaking observation of hand hygiene practices were discussed during the session. A number of key implementation tools and how and when they can be used were described.

The First Global Patient Safety Challenge hope that the workshop has been useful for participants to formulate an action plan for undertaking training activities on hand hygiene within their countries and to ensure plans are in place to support the scale-up and sustainability of hand hygiene compliance within the South-East Asian Region.
