Between May 2010 and May 2011, moderate acute malnutrition has risen from 7 to 22%. This, combined with poor access to safe drinking water particularly in rural areas (51%), is raising the risk for outbreaks of communicable and waterborne diseases. A third of the population needs assistance.

In June 2011, the Ministry of Health reported high numbers of measles cases in Hoboken and watery diarrhoea and dysentery cases in Nikhil and Ali Sabah.
