    Fighting the rise in cholera cases in Haiti

    The number of cholera cases reported in May and early June rose partly due to the beginning of the rainy season., Whereas many NGOs are scaling down operations in rural areas, WHO/PAHO is asking partners to consider keeping staff and facilities in place, and international donors to continue their support for these activities. Poor access to clean water and proper sanitation remains the main challenge in fighting the epidemic.

    Haiti earthquake: one year on

    This month marked one year since the earthquake hit Haiti on 12 January 2010. At the WHO 128th Executive Board Meeting’s special presentation on Haiti, the WHO Director-General reminded the participants of how the response to the earthquake tested to the limit the capacities of the Organization and of its partners, including donors and all stakeholders.

    Haiti: sustaining the humanitarian health response

    Since the beginning of December, the response has focused on keeping the supply chain operational and developing contingency plans for new emergencies. WHO/PAHO, the Cuban Medical Mission and the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in support to the Ministry of Health and Population (MSPP), have developed a plan dedicated to surveillance, alert and response and departmental coordination which will lead to a more efficient response in situations where security is volatile.

    Haiti: controlling the cholera outbreak

    As of 1 December Haiti’s Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) reported 80 860 cholera cases and 1817 related deaths nationwide. All ten departments are affected. The actual number of cases and deaths remain underestimated due to the weak surveillance system. One-third of all reported deaths occur in the community. Up to 400 000 people could become ill over the next six to 12 months, half of which during the first three months.

    Haiti: response to the cholera outbreak

    As of 27 October, the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) reported 4722 cholera cases and 303 related deaths. It is the first outbreak of cholera in Haiti in decades.
