The tsunamis hit the coast of the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Kerala and Pondicherry on the mainland. Additionally, the Andaman and Nicobar islands were particularly affected. Medical teams consisting of epidemiologists, surgeons and other health specialists are in the affected areas, monitoring the situation, relief operations, in coordination with local authorities, WHO, other UN organizations and NGOs.

Health priorities

  • Provision of necessary medical care to injured survivors
  • Access to adequate safe water supplies to displaced individuals (disease prevention measure), particularly in Andaman and Nicobar islands
  • Strengthening sanitation infrastructure and basic hygienic conditions (disease prevention measure)
  • Strengthening of disease surveillance network, to rapidly identify potential disease outbreaks
