Southern Africa Floods
The heavy rains since December 2007 are causing flooding in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. About 80,800 people have currently been affected(72,000 in Mozambique, 8,000 in Zimbabwe and 800 in Zambia). Humanitarian partners estimated that in Mozambique about 282,000 people would be affected including last year's flood victims who have not yet resettled. The floods have damaged crops and infrastructure. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.Relief operations have been initiated by the respective governments, and are being supported by the international humanitarian community (OCHA report). With regards to the long rainy season ahead, humanitarian needs in the region are likely to increase. Namibia and Angola could face the indirect impact of the heavy rainfalls (down flow) mainly due to increased vectors' breeding.
