Cholera in Iraq

10 September 2008 -- On 20 August 2008, cases of acute watery diarrhoea from Baghdad and Misan Province were laboratory confirmed as cholera. They constitute the first cholera cases detected in Iraq in 2008. To date there have been 10 fatalities, three of whom tested positive for Vibrio cholera.

WHO Resumes Permanent International Presence in Iraq

WHO Iraq

WHO has upgraded its international status in Iraq and resumed the permanent basing of foreign staff in the country. This move will strengthen WHO's support for the Iraqi government's response to humanitarian crises, healthcare system reform and further reprioritization of its health services.

Situation Report on Cholera Outbreak in Northern Iraq

As of 2nd of October 2007, 25 districts of Northern Iraq and 14 districts in the south and center have reported laboratory-confirmed cases of cholera. In north Iraq; 13 out of the 14 districts of Sulymania governorate, all five districts of Kirkuk governorate, 6 out of the seven districts of Erbil governorate, one district in Dahuk. As for the center and south; the affected districts are: 3 districts in each of Tikrit; Mosul and Diala, 2 districts 2 in Basra as well as one district in each of Wassit, Mosul, Baghdad and Anbar.

Agreement reached on providing health care to displaced Iraqis

3 August 2007 -- Displaced Iraqis living in Egypt, Jordan and Syria should receive health care similar to the local population, health ministries of the host countries agreed at a meeting this week. WHO convened the ministerial consultation to review the health needs of Iraqis living in nearby countries.
