FAQs: Japan tsunami concerns

21 March 2011

Is it safe to eat fish or other seafood from the tsunami affected area?

It is usually safe to eat fish, as long as there is no contamination by sewage, chemicals or other pollutants. Local authorities provide the best advice, including situations where fish should be cooked thoroughly prior to eating. It is important to acknowledge that many survivors may be reluctant to eat fish since the bodies of their loved ones have been washed out to sea.
