WHO responds to essential health needs in the drought-stricken Horn of Africa
10 August 2011 -- The drought in the Horn of Africa is putting the health of 12.4 million people at risk from disease and widespread malnutrition. WHO is working with Ministries of Health and Health Cluster partners to coordinate the response both within the affected countries and across borders. Main health priorities include management of severe acute malnutrition with medical complications, prevention and control of communicable diseases, early detection and response to outbreaks and basic health services for vulnerable populations. To scale up its response in affected areas, WHO will require an additional US$ 23.4 million.

WHO develops health sector response plan for the Horn of Africa humanitarian crisis
29 July 2011 - The World Health Organization (WHO) will require US$ 29.5 million to finance the prevention and mitigation of disease in the Horn of Africa drought affected areas. The health of 12.4 million people is at risk as a result of widespread malnutrition and disease following the worst drought in the region in decades.

Building up health response in the Horn of Africa
Malnutrition affects more than 350 000 children in Kenya. Global acute malnutrition is estimated at 25% in affected areas, reaching 37.7% in north-western Turkana District. An estimated 1200 Somalis arrive in Dadaab each day. Exhaustion and poor health, combined with low vaccination coverage and high prevalence of malnutrition, raise the risk for outbreaks of measles, cholera and other diarrhoeal diseases. In affected areas, health facilities are overwhelmed while disease surveillance and outbreak preparedness are inadequate.

Impact on the health of communities in the Horn of Africa
The health and nutritional status of many communities in the Horn of Africa is fast deteriorating. Lack of water and precarious sanitation further increase the risk of communicable diseases. WHO, UNICEF and the Ministry of Health of Kenya are preparing a polio and measles vaccination campaign along the Kenya-Somali border and in the Dadaab refugee camps.

Drought and food crisis in the Horn of Africa
The Horn of Africa is facing what has been described as the worst drought in over half a century. Around ten million people in Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia and Uganda are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
