Philippines Tropical Storm Washi Donor Alert

Tropical storm Washi struck the Southern Philippines on 16 December 2011, leaving a trail of devastation in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan on Mindanao island. The ensuing floods, which were almost tsunami-like in their impact, killed more than 1000 people, injured almost 2000, and affected over 640 000 others. Almost 50 000 people have taken temporary refuge in evacuation centres. More than a quarter of a million others are thought to be living either with relatives or in makeshift shelters. Of the US$ 28.5 million needed for the emergency response, WHO and health partners are seeking US$1 763 397 (6%) to meet the emergency health needs of around 300 000 people.


Pakistan Floods Donor Alert

28 September 2011 -- The recent heavy flooding caused by the monsoon in Pakistan, most devastating in Sindh, has affected the lives of over five million people. Flood waters continue to drain, leaving behind massive damage and large areas of standing water in Sindh. In the framework of the Pakistan Rapid Response Plan for the Floods, the Health and Nutrition Cluster is appealing for US$ 45.9 million, of which US$14.8 are requested by WHO for health, nutrition and water and sanitation interventions.


WHO develops health sector response plan for the Horn of Africa humanitarian crisis

29 July 2011¦ Geneva - The health of 12.4 million people is at risk as a result of widespread malnutrition and disease following the worst drought in the Horn of Africa region in decades. The situation is intensified by the ongoing conflict in Somalia which has led to mass population displacements, as people flee both drought and warfare. The World Health Organization (WHO) will require US$ 29.5 million to finance the prevention and mitigation of disease in the Horn of Africa drought affected areas.


US$ 11.1-million health and nutrition response launched for Libya

7 March 2011 | GENEVA -- During the next three months WHO and its partners urgently need US$ 11.1 million to provide health care and to meet the nutritional needs of persons affected by civil unrest in Libya. This amount is part of the US$ 160 million Regional Flash Appeal for the Libya crisis, launched by the United Nations today in Geneva. The number of war wounded people is estimated at 5000 and 2 million are in need of basic health care. Currently there is a shortage of surgical supplies, burn dressings and blood transfusion bags.


WHO's planned support in Somalia for 2011

Somalia has suffered from ongoing civil strife since the early 1990s. 2010 has brought about new and pressing needs particularly in South Central Somalia where conflict and displacement continue to disrupt health services, displace communities and restrict access to the already limited health services.
