Humanitarian Health Action

Burundi

A new political environment lead by the first democratically elected government since 1993 has been established in 2005. In 2006, the international community will continue supporting Burundi, providing the humanitarian assistance needed during this period of early stabilization and recovery.

In 2004, the Crude Mortality Rate ranged between 1.3 and 1.9 per 10,000 per day. The main health problem remains malaria, responsible for 47% of the hospital deaths among children under-five and 40% of the caseload in health centres. Acute respiratory infections, diarrhoeal diseases and measles continue to contribute significantly to infant and child mortality. Maternal Mortality is still very high at 1,000/100,000 live births.
