Southern Africa
The humanitarian crisis in Southern Africa (including Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) is widely recognized as the result of the triple threat of HIV/AIDs, governance issues, and food insecurity.
The health sector is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of the crisis. Recent assessments by WHO reveal major health concerns including high childhood and early adult mortality; high mortality (and resignation rates) amongst health service staff; high levels of malnutrition; high morbidity combined with poor access to health care; inadequate and poor quality health services; and health systems on the verge of collapse.
