Severe acute malnutrition in children

WHO modular kit for the inpatient management with medical complications

To facilitate the management of severe acute malnutrition with medical complications in children, WHO has developed a modular kit comprising inpatient registration, medical equipment, medical supplies and drugs. The drugs module provides medical treatment for 50 children under five. It includes antibiotics, antifungal, de-worming, antimalarial and anti-scabies medicines, and a rehydration mix specific for cases of severe acute malnutrition.

The kit is designed to complement the UNICEF kits which provide anthropometric equipment, kitchen supplies and medical supplies. It does not include therapeutic foods.

The list of drugs was reviewed by experts in the area of management of severe acute malnutrition, the WHO Expert Committee on Essential Medicines and concerned WHO technical departments.
