The Public Health Pre-Deployment (PHPD) Course prepares public health and other professionals, to work effectively and safely in emergency and crisis situations. The course prepares professionals and humanitarian aid workers to respond better to emergencies.

The PHPD Course is a two-week residential course organized by WHO, Health Action in Crises (HAC). It is delivered by a pool of experienced humanitarian and public health experts from WHO, academic and technical institutions as well as non-governmental organizations.

Emergencies, disasters and other crises are increasing in number and magnitude, with more and more people being affected. Public health systems, social safety nets and communities in many countries become further weakened and are often overwhelmed.

The humanitarian community needs a pool of dedicated, qualified and experienced public health professionals who are properly trained and retained to support countries during the critical phases of a major emergency, disaster or humanitarian crisis. These professionals need to be familiar with evidence based best practices and tools in public health problem-solving in emergencies, as well as the necessary management and operational skills to deliver a coordinated, integrated and equitable public health action in challenging, rapidly-changing, chaotic and often times insecure environments.

These professionals are also expected to effectively and efficiently work with national emergency health teams and also with the health cluster and other clusters at country level.

The organizers are committed to strengthen the national response capability through preparation and mobilization of the international humanitarian community's capacity to address public health priorities in emergencies and consequently reducing loss of lives and the burden of disease and disability.
