Public Health Mapping and GIS

HIV/AIDS

WHO in collaboration with its partners is developing strategies for a health systems approach to strengthening HIV/AIDS/STI (sexually transmitted infections) surveillance, prevention and control.

As part of this activity, the Public Health Mapping and GIS programme is developing a global information and mapping system for HIV/AIDS with these objectives:

  • allow WHO and its partners to monitor and analyse the temporal and geographic trends in HIV infection, AIDs and STIs;
  • support the development of appropriate surveillance, prevention and control activities at national, regional and international levels;
  • serve as a decision-support tool for improved planning and allocation of resources;
  • provide global access to essential information on HIV/AIDS/STIs to WHO and its partners.

The first phase has been to map out HIV sentinel surveillance sites throughout the world and to integrate epidemiological data with information on population distributions and proximity to major roads. Phase 2 includes the integration of information relating to blood safety, access to care, behavioural data and information on antiretroviral resistance ase well as the development of a user-friendly interface for querying data.
