Introduction

Prevention Service Availability Mapping (PSAM) was an HIV-specific tool to collect and present information on HIV prevention efforts in the community. Like the SAM, its main application was at the sub-national or district level, where district health management teams used the results of the PSAM in conjunction with WHO's HealthMapper application to map and monitor prevention efforts.

The PSAM was made up of 4 questionnaires. It used the SAM facility questionnaire as well as school, workplace, and priority prevention area (PPA) questionnaires. These questionnaires were applied in all public and private health care facilities and schools, major workplaces, and places where people meet sexual partners.

The PSAM built upon the Priorities for Local AIDS Control Efforts (PLACE) and SAM methodologies and was tested in Mwanza Region, Tanzania.
