Dr Ties Boerma, World Health Organization (WHO)
Dr Ties Boerma is Director of the WHO Department of Health Statistics and Informatics within the Innovation, Information, Evidence and Research Cluster at WHO in Geneva. He obtained degrees in medicine (MD, University of Groningen, Netherlands) and medical demography (PhD, University of Amsterdam) and has over 25 years of experience working in public health and research programmes in developing countries, including 10 years in Africa. In the United States, Dr Boerma worked for Demographic and Health Surveys as Health Coordinator and as Director of the MEASURE Evaluation project, while holding an appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In Africa, he worked for UNICEF both as Associate Regional Adviser in eastern and southern Africa and as district-based Monitoring and Evaluation Adviser in Kenya; as well as leader of a National Institute for Medical Research/Royal Tropical Institute-Amsterdam research and intervention project on HIV/AIDS in Mwanza, United Republic of Tanzania. Dr Boerma has published extensively on monitoring and evaluation, health information, HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health in epidemiological, demographic and public health journals.
