In 1999, work began in South Essex Health Authority on a tool for HIA, in the context of environmental issues. The format of the tool follows the style of national and regional work in developing health impact assessments. An easy-to-use assessment grid is shown, with the following sub-headings: perceived environment, socioeconomic factors, psychosocial factors, lifestyle factors, environmental factors and services. The grid is then used to evaluate the potential health impacts of a compressed working week, a project which was developed as part of the local health authority’s Green Commuter Plan.
