Resource/Evaluation type
Completed HIA
Subject area
Transport and communications
Summary
United Kingdom
This prospective HIA was conducted on behalf of a multi-agency steering group and commissioned by the Liverpool Health Authority. It identifies the key health impacts of the Merseyside Integrated Transport Strategy (MerITS), using methods that can be used for prospective HIAs of other public policies: HIA, strategic environmental assessment and policy research. They include policy analysis, semi-structured interviews with key informants and literature searches.
The four priority impact areas identified for MerITS are: establishing road hierarchies, economic viability, air quality and public transport. Potential health impacts in each of these areas are estimated and recommendations are made to minimize the negative impacts and enhance the positive ones.
