London Mayoral Strategy on waste
Resource/Evaluation type
Rapid health impact assessment
Subject area
Waste management
Summary
United Kingdom - 2001
In London, the Mayor is responsible for producing a set of strategies covering transport, economic development, buildings, land use, the environment, as well as culture. These strategies must take into account sustainable development, health and inequalities; they must also be able to work together and minimize conflict.
At a London Health Commission meeting in 2001, it was agreed to carry out, jointly with the Environment Committee, a health impact assessment of the draft Municipal Waste Management Strategy. The London Health Commission also commissioned a review of selected research evidence relevant to the draft. This evidence is summarised in section 2 of the report. In line with the process adopted for the health impact assessments of previous draft strategies, this HIA includes the outcomes from two meetings of the London Health Commission; a policy appraisal workshop; and an input from the Environmental Strategies Investigative Committee.
The document gives guidance on the actions to be undertaken in order to link health and well-being with waste management. Many of the proposed improvements are linked to developing and implementing better communication and advocacy strategies, including power of example.
